Rubber duck summer

Swimming pool trivia is perfect for sweltering summer

It’s June, and I live in Arizona. Which means I currently spend all my time in either my air-conditioned house or my swimming pool. Those are the only two acceptable options or I will die. With swimming pools at the top of my heat-addled brain, I’ve put together a mini-game of swimming pool trivia.

Dive right in to movie swimming pool trivia:

Questions:

  1. What 1950 noir classic opens with a famous shot of a body floating face-down in a swimming pool? Turns out the dead guy is our male lead, who flashes back to tell us how he ended up there in voiceover.
  2. In a much parodied scene (“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” “Family Guy,” “Stacy’s Mom”) from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” what actress iconically emerges from a swimming pool in a tiny red bikini?
  3. What 1996 adaptation ingeniously sets its source material’s famed balcony scene in a swimming pool, allowing for the two young stars to be soaking wet and therefore exponentially hotter?
  4. A shot of a man wearing full scuba gear while standing at the bottom of a residential swimming pool is one of several indelible images from what 1967 movie?
  5. In what 2016 film does a malfunction with the gravity regulator on a spaceship nearly cause one of the lead characters to drown when the pool she’s doing laps in becomes an inescapable bubble of watery doom?

Answers up after my favorite poolside jam, “Armada Latina” by Cypress Hill featuring Pitbull and Marc Anthony. I dare you to listen to this and not instantly taste margaritas and smell coconut sunscreen.
